What's Next After Filing
Once your LLC is officially formed, you'll want to complete these important steps:
- •Obtain an EIN from the IRS — Apply for a Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS, which is required for opening a business bank account, hiring employees, and filing federal and state taxes. Single-member LLCs without employees may still need an EIN for banking purposes. Applications are free and can be completed online at IRS.gov.
- •Register for Michigan State Taxes — Register with the Michigan Department of Treasury for applicable state taxes through the Michigan Treasury Online (MTO) portal. Depending on your business activities, you may need to register for sales tax, use tax, withholding tax, or the Michigan Business Tax if applicable.
- •File Annual Reports and Maintain Compliance — Michigan LLCs must file an annual statement (annual report) each year by February 15 with LARA, with a $25 filing fee. Ensure ongoing compliance by maintaining a registered agent, keeping records, renewing any required business licenses, and filing state and federal tax returns.
