What's Next After Filing

Once your Nonprofit is officially formed, you'll want to complete these important steps:

  • Obtain an EIN from the IRSApply for a Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS, which is required for tax filings, opening a bank account, and applying for tax-exempt status. You can apply online through the IRS website at no cost.
  • Apply for Federal Tax-Exempt StatusFile IRS Form 1023 (or Form 1023-EZ for smaller organizations) to apply for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status with the IRS; this process can take 3-6 months or longer. Tax-exempt status is not automatic upon state incorporation and must be separately obtained from the IRS.
  • Register with Maryland for Charitable SolicitationsIf your nonprofit will solicit charitable contributions in Maryland, you must register with the Office of the Secretary of State's Charitable Organizations Division before fundraising. Most charitable organizations must file annually and pay a registration fee based on gross contributions received.
