What's Next After Filing
Once your Nonprofit is officially formed, you'll want to complete these important steps:
- •Draft Bylaws and Hold Organizational Meeting — Create bylaws that govern your nonprofit's internal operations, including meeting procedures, officer roles, and board responsibilities. Hold an organizational meeting to adopt bylaws, elect officers, and conduct initial corporate business.
- •Apply for Federal Tax-Exempt Status — File IRS Form 1023 (or Form 1023-EZ for smaller organizations) to apply for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status with the IRS. This requires an Employer Identification Number (EIN), which you can obtain for free from the IRS website.
- •Register for Florida Charitable Solicitation — If your nonprofit will solicit donations in Florida, register with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) under the Solicitation of Contributions Act. Initial registration fees range from $10 to $400 based on prior year contributions.
